Editing: Ancillary Products Improvements

These are the improvements that I'm going to make -
  • Use different range of font for poster & possibly different font for the title of the advert to make it stand out - I'm going to play about with using a different font to see if it will work. The only issue is that for continuity and aesthetics it being the same might be better,
  • More detail of copyright on the back - although I researched into whats on the back of Bon Iver's albums and there wasn't any info about copyright I will research into this more.
  • ',' on the advert but no on the EP - I will correct this issue.

Changing the font -
I started by trying various different fonts to see if there was another one that was suitable
'Charlemagne Std' was one of the options which I asked for feedback on. It was decided it wasn't different enough.
In the end 'Didot' was the most suitable and when asked for feedback agreed that it was different enough to make it stand out, the bold font being part of that.

Detail of Copyright on back -

I went back and checked my research about the back of the Digipak and have decided that detailed copyright information isn't usually conventional on Bon Iver's albums therefore I don't feel it's necessary.

Correcting grammatical errors
I have now added the missing coma.

I have now made all the necessary improvements to my ancillary products and they are finished.

Editing: Feedback on the Ancillary Products

Today I conducted a focus group in order to get feedback for my ancillary products.

The feedback I got included -

Here are all the comments received. The ones in italic I am going to focus on. -
  • Good clear links between the two products
  • Nice picture
  • Use different range of font for poster & possibly different font for the title of the advert to make it stand out - I'm going to play about with using a different font to see if it will work. The only issue is that for continuity and aesthetics it being the same might be better,
  • Decorate inside digipak & could put something on the inside cover - picture of scenery? - I have decided to keep the inside plain to keep with the simplicity theme. And I also have the issue that as it is now a different time of year to when I shot the images going back and taking more photos would jeopardise the continuity.
  • Good photography
  • Centered/nice positioning - aesthetically pleasing
  • Overall really good
  • Simple but nice colour scheme
  • More detail of copyright on the back - although I researched into whats on the back of Bon Iver's albums and there wasn't any info about copyright I will research into this more.
  • ',' on the advert but no on the EP - I will correct this issue.
I will now work on making the improvements.

Editing: Creating the Magazine Advert

I started editing by creating a white background and making it 19x29 for it to be A4, I then added the photo from the front of the digipak so it could be connected with consumers when purchasing the album. After that I added the matching 'bon iver, blood bank' which is also on the digipak
I then had the hard decision of the font for the rest of the text on the advert
I tested out various ones including this one 'Trajan Pro' and these...
'Letter Gothic Std'
'Nueva Std'
'Baskerville' is the one I liked the most which I thought was also the most conventionally suitable too. I went on to add other bits of text around and also played around on whether to have what in all capitals and where to have the text I went for the top option in the end
I then added a #, website and production company at the bottom to give the consumers some information. I played around with where to place the production company's logo
I then searched online to look for 5 stars to give reviews of the album to the consumers
I wanted to connect the music video to this advertisement was added the 'featuring the single 'beach baby'
In my research I saw some advertisements had two reviews so duplicated the layer and had two ratings
I then added the text 'the mirror' and 'me' under the stars to create authenticity
Now that I had finished and spent a lot of time making sure it's all straight I decided to crop the top as  the background was a bit long...
and here is the finished magazine advert...
I will now focus on getting feedback from some of my target audience and then make any improvements suggested etc

Editing: Using Photoshop to Create Digipak

I started by importing the template into Photoshop
I then added the photo I wish to use, which I then cropped to the size I want. I then copied this over to the template
I firstly tried out the photo using it all across to give it a panoramic look (I later changed this after not liking the font on the photo)
I then started to look into the new choices of text I had to chose from. I saw that they had Zapfino which was my chosen one from when I first started editing on Plixr. I changed my mind on this one once it was on the digipak and looked for an alternative.
'Snell Roundhand' was my next option, but weren't quite happy with how it looked so went to look again.
The final one I really liked and went for was ' Savoye LET' as it was a hand written one which I wanted to go for as it suited the conventions etc.
Once I saw it with the image all the way across with the text I decided I didn't like it therefore went on too...
Make the picture smaller to fit just on the front of the digipak and also changed the font to black from white and after placing the text in various places I preferred where it is the most, I also got my peers opinion too
Next which I didn't screenshot I added the text on the back of the digipak (songs etc) in the same font as the front text, and it was also black. I placed it to be central.
After that I added the Jagjaguwar logo onto the back to have on the bottom of the back.
Underneath the logo on the real digipaks is writing, which is typically in easily readable font that it simple. I went for 'PT Sans Narrow'
This is the finished look of the back after I also added the barcode onto it for authenticity

I then saved it as a JPEG in order to get some feedback on it and when I looked at it I saw that the back wasn't very central...
Therefore I went back onto Photoshop and moved it about to make sure its central and it is now much better.
I then printed it off to see a mock up of it/get feedback on it...

Editing: Creating/Planning the Digipak

To create the digipak I am going to use the website - PicMonkey & Plixr they are both sites that is much like Photoshop. I am going to use this as I am already familiar with it having used it many times before.
I began editing by adding the chosen image into Plixr and then started to look into what font would be most suitable -

Update: Since I began editing my Digipak photos on Plixr I came to realise that I couldn't import a template and work on that so I am now going to use Photoshop.

This is the template I am going to use, which I found, here. Although this is a layout for all 4 sides - indicating that I would be creating all of the digipak I am only creating the front and back. If I were to do it all, on the inside I would potentially have a panoramic photo of of on the shots from the video - to link them together even more so. As I am not creating the inside I need not to worry about that.

This is the kind of digipak I am going for.

To get a visual of what the Digipak will be like I printed out the plain template and made a quick mock one...
